Custom Sliding Doors: A Specification and Quote Checklist

Turn a custom size into a complete specification

Custom sliding doors are made around a particular opening, layout or finish. A useful custom order specifies the complete system: frame size, panel movement, glass, hardware, performance requirements and installation detail. Width and height alone are not enough to compare two quotations or release a door for manufacture.

For a homeowner, this prevents an attractive door from arriving with the wrong handing or insufficient passage. For a builder buying several openings, it also makes each unit traceable to the correct location. Give every opening a reference that appears on the drawing, quotation, packing label and installation schedule.

Before requesting a price: identify whether the door is internal or external, define the clear opening you need and agree who will confirm the final manufacturing dimensions. These decisions guide the frame and hardware selection that follows.

The dimensions that custom sliding doors need

Separate the wall opening, the outside frame dimension and the usable passage in the drawing. They are different measurements. Record the opening at several positions because an existing wall may not be square or level, and identify whether measurements refer to finished surfaces.

For example, a proposed frame measuring 2.4 m by 2.1 m has an area of 5.04 m². That calculation is an illustrative frame area, not an opening allowance, glazing area or statement that a particular Forge model is available at that size. Frame deductions and panel sizes must come from the chosen system.

Use one measurement convention throughout the order. If a drawing uses millimetres and a quotation uses square metres, show both clearly instead of relying on the reader to infer the units.

Specify the use before the glass and hardware

An internal partition and a patio door can look similar in a picture while serving different purposes. An external opening needs a coordinated weatherproofing detail and evidence suited to its location. An internal divider may place greater emphasis on sightlines, privacy and the floor transition.

For energy performance, request the rating for the relevant whole product and glazing configuration. The National Fenestration Rating Council residential programme describes independent verification of window and door energy performance. An energy rating for another size, frame or glass package should not be presented as proof for an unverified custom assembly.

For U.S. door glazing, the CPSC guidance describes the architectural product scope of the safety standard. For other destinations, ask the designer to identify the applicable requirements before ordering. Safety, thermal performance and resistance to weather are separate questions.

Hardware needs equal attention. Confirm panel weight limits, opening movement, lock arrangement, handle finish and access for future adjustment. If a product is described as “trackless,” request a section drawing explaining the guide and support arrangement rather than assuming there are no floor components.

Compare quotations line by line

A lower unit price may cover a different glass specification, fewer panels or less installation work. Build a comparison around the same drawing revision so the totals represent the same purchase.

• Door assembly: frame, glass, panel count, finish, hardware and screens if required.
• Evidence: the reports and product identification supplied with the order.
• Site work: removal, disposal, opening preparation, flashing, sealing and making good.
• Logistics: packing, freight, delivery location, unloading and responsibility for transit damage.
• Commercial terms: currency, tax treatment, payment milestones, lead time and written warranty scope.

If a supplier quotes by area, ask which area is chargeable and whether minimum charges apply. A transparent illustrative calculation is: 5.04 m² × quoted unit rate, plus separately agreed items. No market price is implied by this formula.

Ask when the lead time starts: deposit, final measurements, drawing approval or another milestone. A delivery estimate is useful only when everyone is using the same starting point and knows which selections remain open.

Approve the drawing before production

Read the approval drawing from the stated viewing direction. Check the opening reference, dimensions, moving leaves, fixed panels, panel parking, glazing, handle height and finish. Look at the threshold section as carefully as the front elevation.

Keep a short change record. A switch from clear to obscured glass or from two panels to three should appear in the revised quotation and drawing. An email request that never reaches the approved drawing can lead to an expensive misunderstanding.

Before delivery, agree on the labels used for multiple units and how the installer will identify them. On arrival, check the packing, glass and hardware before installation, following the supplier's handling instructions. Record any discrepancy while the unit and packaging can still be examined.
