Aluminium casement windows are side-hinged windows that open outward and use an aluminium frame. They can be a practical choice for Australian homes when the complete window system—not the frame material alone—is matched to the site, climate and opening. A casement sash closes against compression seals around its perimeter. With suitable hardware and correct adjustment, that closing action can support controlled weather sealing. The outward-opening sash also directs breezes into a room and allows a wide clear opening, subject to size, hardware and safety constraints.
Aluminium is frequently selected for slim profiles, design flexibility and a durable architectural finish. It can support contemporary openings without the visual bulk of some frame types. Those advantages do not establish energy, acoustic or weather performance by themselves: performance belongs to the tested or assessed assembly. Aluminium conducts heat readily. In a standard frame, the internal and external aluminium sections provide a relatively direct heat path. A thermally broken frame separates those sections with a less-conductive barrier. This can reduce frame heat transfer, but the result still depends on the full system, including the glass, edge spacer, sash geometry and frame-to-glass ratio.

The Australian Government’s YourHome glazing guidance explains that U-value describes heat conduction through the whole window, while SHGC describes solar heat entering through it. A lower U-value means better resistance to conductive heat flow. The appropriate SHGC depends on factors such as orientation, shading, climate and the home’s heating or cooling needs.
Ask whether published figures cover the complete window rather than centre-of-glass performance. The frame can be a meaningful part of a smaller casement window, so two windows with similar glass may have different whole-window results. The Window Energy Rating Scheme (WERS), managed by the Australian Glass and Window Association, is designed to help compare the energy performance of fenestration products. Do not claim or rely on a WERS result unless it applies to the named product and supplier.
Single glazing, insulated glass units, low-emissivity coatings, tints and laminated or toughened glass address different needs. Glass selection should respond to thermal design, daylight, solar exposure, safety, noise and budget together. Double glazing may improve resistance to heat transfer, but it does not make frame conduction, solar control, seals or installation irrelevant.
Inspect the number and continuity of perimeter seals, corner joints, hinge capacity, locking points and adjustment access. A sash should close evenly onto its seals without excessive operating force. NCC 2022 Housing Provisions Part 13.4 on building sealing includes provisions for sealing openable windows serving specified spaces and notes an AS 2047 air-infiltration pathway. Project teams must confirm the edition, state or territory variations and compliance pathway currently applicable to their job.
Ratings must suit the building location, height, terrain, shielding, corner conditions and exposure to wind-driven rain. The AGWA compliance guidance explains that AS 2047 testing addresses deflection, operating force, air infiltration, water penetration resistance and ultimate strength. Ask for documentation that identifies the relevant system and rating; do not transfer evidence from a different size or configuration without technical confirmation.
Powder-coated and anodised finishes can provide different appearances and maintenance requirements. The suitable specification depends on the alloy, coating system, colour, location and environmental exposure. Coastal salt, industrial contaminants and sheltered areas that are not naturally rain-washed may require closer attention. Obtain the finish supplier’s written suitability and care guidance for the project location rather than relying on colour alone.
Confirm frame support, fixings, flashings, sill drainage, clearances and the perimeter sealant interface before fabrication. Drainage paths must remain open, and the opening must be prepared so water is directed to the exterior. Follow the window supplier’s installation instructions, the approved construction details and the requirements set by the project designer or certifier.
They can be, but the answer depends on the complete assembly. Compare whole-window U-value and SHGC for the specified frame, glazing and size. A thermally broken frame and an appropriate insulated glass unit may improve thermal performance, but the correct combination remains climate- and project-specific.
No single frame type is automatically required for every home. The decision should follow the project’s climate, glazing area, orientation, comfort objectives, condensation analysis and energy compliance pathway. Obtain project-level advice where the consequences are material.

Request drawings, glass make-up, whole-window energy values where relevant, wind and water ratings, air-infiltration information, finish specification, hardware schedule, installation instructions and applicable compliance documentation. Check that every document refers to the configuration being purchased.
They may be suitable when the frame finish, hardware, fixings, sealants and maintenance regime are specified for the actual exposure.
